WrittaShot User Guide
WrittaShot includes comprehensive built-in documentation. Open the app and click the ? icon in the top bar to access the full user guide, or start the Interactive Tour for a hands-on walkthrough of the interface.
Screenplay
Import screenplays from Fountain, PDF, TXT, or RTF files, or write directly in the built-in editor. WrittaShot automatically formats scene headings, action, dialogue, characters, parentheticals, and transitions. Scenes can be renumbered with letter suffixes (1, 2A, 2B) and tracked across revisions.
Shots & Image Prompts
Break down each scene into individual shots with shot type, description, duration, mood, and action. Generate shots manually or use AI-powered breakdown to automatically analyze your scene. Each shot includes an image prompt field designed for AI image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, or Stable Diffusion.
Characters
Manage character profiles with descriptions, images, and appearance tracking. WrittaShot automatically extracts characters from your screenplay and lets you see which scenes each character appears in through the timeline view.
Connections
Visualize relationships between scenes on an interactive canvas. Map story threads, character arcs, and plot connections to better understand your screenplay's structure.
AI Chat
Chat with an AI assistant that understands your screenplay context. Choose from specialized presets like Dialogue Expert, Character Analyst, or Visual Director. Conversations can include your screenplay, scenes, and freestyle documents for context-aware assistance. Requires a Claude API key or credit subscription.
Freestyle
A free-form writing space for notes, treatments, character backstories, or any creative content that doesn't fit the screenplay format. Freestyle documents can be included in AI conversations for additional context.
Revisions
Save your screenplay as numbered revisions to track changes over time. Compare revisions to see which scenes were added or modified. Switch between revisions at any time without losing work.
Export
Export your work in multiple formats: PDF for professional storyboards, HTML for web sharing, JSON for data interchange, and CSV for spreadsheet workflows. Export entire projects or individual scenes.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Speed up your workflow with keyboard shortcuts for common actions. Undo/redo, navigate between scenes, toggle auto-scroll, and manage shots without leaving the keyboard. The full shortcut list is available in the in-app documentation.
Privacy & Local-First
All your projects are stored locally on your device. WrittaShot does not upload your screenplays to any server. AI features are optional and use your own API key or credit subscription, with data sent directly to the AI provider and never stored on our servers.
